The Hamptons, on eastern Long Island's South Fork, are a string of seaside communities and a summer destination for New York City residents. They are marked by long stretches of beach, an interior of farmland and hamlets with 18th-century shingle buildings, and estates hidden behind tall boxwood hedges. Home to tennis courts, golf courses, main streets lined with luxury boutiques, vineyards and wineries, museums, galleries and art institutes, seafood restaurants, surfing, and of course beaches. Starting in Southampton to the tip of Montauk, known as “the end” by locals, here is our guide to Long Island.

CANOE PLACE Everything about Canoe Place Inn is magic: the floor-to-ceiling trellised-botanical-print wallpaper, cozy alpaca throw blankets, walk-in rain shower (stocked with Costa Brazil bath products), and lush garden punctuated with loungers, sofas, and the most beautiful green marble bar. 239 E Montauk Hwy., Hampton Bays; canoeplace.com

EHP RESORT & MARINA With its cottages and suites—complete with balconies, decks, even backyards—EHP is one of the more private properties in East Hampton. Amenities-wise, you’re spoiled for choice: Tennis courts, a well-appointed gym, wellness programming, and water activities. JOURNEY EAST HAMPTON A stay at Journey is intimate; there are only 22 rooms and cottages. Most evenings start with a nostalgic activity we’re never too old for—s’mores around the firepit—and end with glasses of wine or tumblers of whiskey in the cozy lobby. There is a pool, as well as yoga in the morning and bocce in the afternoon; should you crave less, there’s always a garden seat waiting under a shady tree for some reading and a snooze. The interior is a love letter to mid-century modern design, while the exterior is that picture-perfect cedar-shingle Hamptons house you’ve long dreamed of visiting—surrounded by manicured gardens and a pool deck full of striped parasols and loungers. Guest rooms feel like home with soft blankets folded atop beds of Frette linens or thrown on the back of sofas. 490 Pantigo Rd., East Hampton; journeyeasthampton.com

MCKINLEY BUNGALOWS As the eye behind well-trafficked Montauk spots Ruschmeyer’s and the Surf Lodge, interior designer Robert McKinley is no stranger to the beach town's mellow vibe and wild coastline. McKinley and his wife, Kate Nauta, opened McKinley Bungalows, six sprawling homes available for rent. We love the design details here, like natural oak floors and exposed beams, vintage decorative objects mixed with mid-century modern furniture, and lively communal spaces for families or weekend guests. And if you really love it, everything from the linens and furniture to the homes themselves is entirely shoppable, should you want to bring some of those Montauk memories home with you. mckinleybungalow.com

THE MONTAUK BEACH HOUSE This is the kind of convivial, party-prone place you want to go with a group of friends. In fact, the vintage-themed guest rooms are meant to be shared. 55 S. Elmwood Ave., Montauk; thembh.com

MONTAUK YACHT CLUB Recently reopened after a head-to-toe renovation, and now managed by the same team that runs the Proper hotels, the 107–guest room Montauk Yacht Club is better than ever. The property occupies a stretch of shoreline with a marina and a pristine private beach, multiple pools, and access to trails for hiking and biking. The new bar and restaurant, Ocean Club, is a transplant from St. Barth; chef Jarad McCarroll serves a menu of seafood and local produce from a wood-fired grill. The redesigned fitness center and spa are highlights, as are the tennis, pickleball, bocce, and volleyball courts. The hotel also keeps a few electric boats in the marina for sunset cruises, fishing excursions, and day trips. 32 Star Island Rd., Montauk; montaukyachtclub.com

THE REFORM CLUB This luxurious inn with spare, elegant rooms, soaring ceilings, tiled fireplaces, and super-indulgent bathrooms is a quiet retreat that’s private enough to work as a couples’ or family getaway. The comfy living areas are stocked with thoughtful snacks and strewn with coffee-table books. The gardens are beautiful—perfect for a wedding or gathering. If you're traveling with a group, ask about 21 House, the four-bedroom private home, which comes with all the amenities of the larger inn (housekeeping, gym, transportation) and is available for private rentals. 23 Windmill Ln., Amagansett; reformclubamagansett.com

SUNSET BEACH Just north of most of the action, Shelter Island remains one of the quieter parts of the Hamptons—cynics would say it's a bit like Montauk in the old days, before real estate values in the area exploded. André Balazs's Sunset Beach Hotel sidles right up next to the ocean. The 20 guest rooms all have private porches looking out onto the water. As at any Balazs hotel, the scene is on point, with a great little European-style restaurant and a bar that offers some of the area's best DJs. Easy access to the beach also makes activities here especially nice—bikes are complimentary, and the hotel will happily arrange for beach chairs, paddleboards, and boats so guests can water-ski, fish, or explore the area by sea. Good to know: The beach here is west-facing, so it's a great place to watch the sunset. 35 Shore Rd., Shelter Island; Sunsetbeach.fun

THE BAKER HOUSE 1650 A bed and breakfast par excellence, with five very comfortable rooms in the main house—parts of which date back to the mid-17th century—and then, in the Carriage House at the rear of the lush property, another ground-floor room and massive loft suite. The small yet perfectly appointed spa includes a dry sauna, jacuzzi, a counter-current swimming pool, and a full treatment menu. 181 Main St, East Hampton; bakerhouse1650.com

THE HEDGES INN The owners of The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach have brought new life to the Hedges Inn, a beloved landmark right on the cusp of East Hampton town. While a full renovation will come later next year, they’ve already made some notable changes, including bringing Swifty’, a famous Upper East Side restauran, to town along with a Chanel salon. 74 James Ln, East Hampton; thehedgeseasthampton.com

DOPO LA SPIAGGIA In a shingled cottage on a leafy street in Sag Harbor directly facing the water, this little gem is one of our go-to Italian restaurants in the Hamptons. Sure, the setting is almost perfect (we love the tucked-away patio for alfresco dinner on warm evenings, and walks along the marina afterwards), but it’s really the food that keeps us coming back. The pasta dishes are without equal on the East End. The tagliolini (squid ink pasta with bay scallops, shrimp, calamari, chili, and tomatoes) is also one of our favorites. 6 Bay St., Sag Harbor; dopolaspiaggia.com

THE MAIDSTONE RESTAURANT As part of the Maidstone's revamp a few summers back, the hotel brought in Chef David Strandridge (of Cafe Clover) to redo the breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus. For breakfast order the avocado toast with lobster salad, egg in a hole, smoked salmon with Greek yogurt, or the orange blossom pain perdue stewed in blackberries. MOSTRADOR Marram is one of Montauk’s newer hotels, and its beachside restaurant, Mostrador, has that same cool, laid-back energy. The concept, borrowing heavily from the counter-service spots you find throughout Latin America, has been distilled down to a simple formula: the protein of your choice plus hyper-local veg and salad. Think fresh fish, grilled lamb chops, spicy chickpeas, beets, and feta. 21 Oceanview Ter., Montauk; marrammontauk.com/dine
